We all must have made lots of mistakes. Lots of decision when you look back, say I wish they were better thought through. If you pin me down to one, I would say in 2010 our decision to go to Africa was a bit rushed and that has taken 6-7-8 years and lot of resources and my personal time to fix that. [14]

We will discuss more of learning in family firms in Chapter 8.

New knowledge is created at the intersection of two or more disciplines, for example, R&D and marketing, and marketing and sales. Ability to collaborate across lines and staff within the company and across other stakeholders such as vendors and government is an essential skill for moving to senior positions. Collaboration leads to viewing problems from different perspectives, leading to uncovering new knowledge and finally delivering innovation.

In a case of collaboration between different units of a company manufacturing high precision, small dimension dental implants led to a new business of manufacturing auto parts with the same high precision technology. When their automotive clients saw their ultraclean sterilized rooms where the delicate dental implants are produced, they realized that they can order more sophisticated and precise automotive parts from this company.

Collaboration between a children’s hospital and a stationery company led them to co-design a backpack with compartments that balance the weight, avoid the movement of the content in the backpack and fasten to the child’s chest with ergonomic and safety straps.

Working in companies which believe in active collaboration and as well as participating in project teams which work across disciplines can not only hone your ability to learn from others but also bring you to the notice of prospective employers as well as alert you to changing career opportunities within and outside the present work environment.
